National Junior Honor Society

The purpose of the National Junior Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for
scholarship. It is to stimulate a desire to render service, promote leadership, develop character,
and encourage citizenship.  Our National Junior Honor Society chapter members at St. Theresa Catholic School have been very busy!  We have enjoyed working with our partners and look forward to serving our community for many years.  This year: 

• STECC partnering - Several NJHS members work with the youngest children on campus at the Early Childhood Center, building relationships and serving as good role models.
• Tutoring - Many serve as tutors for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade in which they offer one-on-one support on topics from organization and study skills to all core content areas. The tutoring program has grown to serve twelve students weekly and is offered from September through April.
• Houston Food Bank - Some NJHS members have volunteered to help feed the hungry at our bi-yearly trip to the Houston Food Bank. Here we sort and package food items for distribution to those in need.
• Composting with Moonshot - We used the funds earned from our tutoring program and what we have learned about food shortages and food waste to begin a campus-wide composting program. Our members check and clean the compost bins in the dining halls daily and three times a week, and carry the food waste to drums that our composting partner, Moonshot Composting Company, picks up. Bi-yearly our composting partner will return nutrient mulch for our campus landscaping.  Track our campus progress here!
