Summer Required Reading

Each student is expected to read two books this summer from their grade level's book title list (in the Links below).  The book list focuses explicitly on texts that help reinforce the 7 Habits and Leader in Me process we are implementing here at STCS.  This assignment aims to expose our students to diverse literary genres and topics while fostering critical thinking skills and a love for learning.

In addition to reading the books, students will be asked to complete a book talk assignment upon their return to school.

Students entering grades 2nd-5th: the Book Talk should include:

• book’s title
• author
• genre
• a summary (without spoilers)
• a description of the main characters and setting,
• one connection (to self, another text, or the world), and
• students should also share their favorite parts of the book and explain whether they recommend it. 

Students entering grades 6th-8th, will present a more detailed analysis, including:
 

• book’s title
• author
• genre
• setting
• character development
• a plot overview
• the theme
• reflect on their response and whether they would recommend the book, with supporting reasons.

We encourage students to take notes on these skills while reading to be best prepared to complete their assignments once they have returned in the fall.
